Slate Paving FAQs

How should I maintain slate paving?

Slate is considered a low maintenance natural stone for several reasons. Slate is a metamorphic rock, meaning it is naturally incredibly robust. It is low in porosity, so it doesn’t absorb stains in the same was as a more absorbent material like sawn sandstone, which makes the need for cleaning less frequent. It’s darker colours are also more forgiving than some lighter natural and even factory-made materials like porcelain.

As with any outdoor material, some cleaning is however, required. We recommend that slate is cleaned periodically (once or twice per year, or quarterly if you prefer your paving looking its best, year-round) with water and a mild detergent. For stubborn stains, a pressure washer and specific stone cleaner can be used.

Does Slate Paving need to be sealed?

Due to its naturally split surface texture, low porosity and aesthetically forgiving nature, sealing is not generally required. However, sealing any natural stone will help with ongoing maintenance, as it helps to hold marks and stains in place, making them easier to remove.

Can slate paving be used as a driveway, and around swimming pools?

Absolutely. Slate’s strength and slip-resistant surface makes it a safe and stylish choice for driveways and poolside areas. If installing slate as a driveway material, ensure that your subbase is deep enough to withstand the weight of vehicles.

Will the colour fade over time?

Unlike some natural stones, slate experiences very little change to its colour over time. As with any natural material, there may be subtle variation and changes over time, but the vibrant colours of slate paving will remain intact for decades.

How do I install slate paving?

It’s best to hire a professional landscaper for installation of natural stone paving slabs like Slate. Natural stone paving should always be laid on a full mortar bed of sharp sand and cement. To aid adhesion between the paving slab and the bedding mortar, we recommend that the underside of each piece of slate is coated with a primer, before laying. Cheshire Paving Stone products come with detailed guidelines to assist you or your contractor.
