Why Choose Granite Paving?
Granite is renowned for its strength (it is one of the strongest natural stones on Earth!), low maintenance character (it is naturally resistant to staining), and timeless appeal. It is supplied with a flamed top surface, which creates a textured, almost sparkly surface that enhances its aesthetics, while also adding slip resistance. Granite paving is a cost-effective choice of natural stone, as it can be more cost effective than other sawn (smooth) materials like sawn sandstone or limestone. It effortlessly blends style and functionality, making Granite a versatile choice for varied range of outdoor applications.

Granite Paving FAQs
Is granite paving suitable for heavy-use areas like driveways?
Yes, granite’s durability makes it ideal for driveways and high-traffic areas. Its strength ensures it can handle heavy loads without cracking. If using granite for your driveway project, it is sensible to choose darker, more forgiving colours, which don’t show tyre markings or oil spills as readily as lighter paving does.
Does granite paving need to be sealed?
Sealing is recommended with any material that has been machine sawn. Although granite is an incredibly dense material, sealing it prior to laying (or afterwards, if that’s not possible) will help to protect it from lingering stains. Sealing helps to hold marks or stains in place and assists with ongoing maintenance.
How should I clean granite paving?
Cleaning granite is straightforward process. Like any exterior material, it will require periodical cleaning. A general clean using warm water, a mild detergent, and soft brush is usually sufficient. For more stubborn stains (i.e. red wine, leaf drop, grease), a pressure washer and a specific stone cleaner should be used.
Does granite fade in colour over time?
Granite is an extremely dense, strong igneous rock, which does not fade over time. With due care and attention, granite paving retains its colour and finish for decades.
Is professional installation necessary?
For the best results, it’s recommended to hire a professional landscaper. Cheshire Paving Stone provides installation guidelines to assist contractors. Exterior paving should always be laid on a full mortar bed (a mix of sharp sand and cement) and never be ‘spot bedded’ or ‘dot and dabbed’ as this can lead to reflective staining and weakens the slabs.
As granite is a less porous natural stone, it’s advisable to coat the back of each slab with a priming adhesive prior to laying, as this helps bond each flag to the mortar bed beneath and prevents any unsightly cement from leaching through and staining the surface of the patio.
