Cheshire Paving Stone’s Paving Slabs Overview

Porcelain Paving

Porcelain paving combines cutting-edge design with exceptional durability, making it a favourite for modern landscaping. Manufactured from clay and minerals, and then baked at extremely high temperatures, porcelain has clean, refined edges, and has no dimensional tolerance, meaning you can lay it with minimal joint lines (5mm). Particularly at home in modern designs.

Low Maintenance: Thanks to its low porosity, porcelain resists water absorption, stains, and algae growth, ensuring a pristine appearance with minimal upkeep. Simply sweep and wash occasionally to keep it looking fresh.

Wide Range of Options: Available in finishes mimicking natural stone, wood, concrete, or quartz, porcelain offers unparalleled design flexibility. Whether you’re creating a sleek terrace, a contemporary pathway, or a sophisticated pool surround, our collection includes styles to suit every taste.

Built to Last: Porcelain’s dense composition ensures it resists scratches, fading, and weather damage, even in high-traffic areas like driveways or commercial spaces. With a slip-resistant R11-rated surface, it’s safe and practical for wet environments, like pool surrounds and water features.

Indian Sandstone Paving

Indian Sandstone is a favourite among landscapers and homeowners for its natural textures, timeless appeal, and versatility. Indian sandstone has been used across UK gardens for decades and is at home across a multitude of applications.

Riven Indian Sandstone: This classic paving option features a hand-split (‘riven’) surface that provides a rustic charm. Perfect for traditional patios, pathways, or driveways, it’s available in a variety of colours, from cool greys to warm autumnal tones, through to light beige and buff colours. Its slip-resistant texture and durability make it an ideal choice for high-traffic areas, while its ability to age gracefully adds lasting character to your outdoor spaces. This material is often laid using a mix of paving sizes but can be laid in single sizes for a more modern look. Riven sandstone has a hand cut edge, meaning it should be laid with a minimum joint width of 10mm.

Smooth Indian Sandstone: For a sleek, contemporary aesthetic, our Smooth Sandstone is machine sawn on all six sides for a refined finish. Perfect for patios, pool surrounds, and garden pathways, it offers a modern look with tight 5mm joints. Available in light tones like Mint Smooth, deeper shades like Light Buff Smooth, or cooling greys like Dove Grey, this paving creates a sophisticated ambiance in any setting. When sawing stone to make it smooth, the pores of the material are opened-up. We therefore recommend that all smooth natural stone is sealed prior to laying. This helps with ongoing maintenance and ensures that any staining is removable. This material is often installed in a singular size – most commonly a 900 x 600mm slab laid in a stretcher (or ‘brick bond’) laying pattern, or a 600 x 600mm slab in a ‘grid format’ – to achieve a sleek, modern finish.

Limestone Paving

Limestone’s naturally smooth textures and consistent colours bring understated elegance to outdoor projects. Cheshire Paving Stone’s limestone range offers something to suit all styles and budgets. At home in both traditional and modern gardens, the materials in this range can be laid with a 5mm joint, owing to their machine sawn edges: the exceptions being our Antique Grey and Yellow options, which are tumbled and have hand cut edges, for a more rustic look.

Classic Appeal: With a fine-grained texture and uniform tones ranging from soft greys to deep blacks, limestone paving complements both traditional and modern designs. It’s warm, earthy tones like Antique Yellow or Kota Brown add timeless charm. Materials like Egyptian Beige and Midnight Black offer a more modern, uniform look.

Robust Performance: Dense and hard-wearing, limestone is ideal for patios, pathways, and driveways, even in dark, damp, or shady areas. Its resistance to water absorption and weathering ensures it remains intact and beautiful for decades.

Aged Beauty: Over time, limestone can develop a soft patina that enhances its character, making it a popular choice for landscapers seeking a natural, timeless look. Midnight Black Limestone weathers from a true black colour into a light grey-charcoal shade once it is laid and exposed to UV rays. It can be treated with colour-enhancing sealer to prevent its colour changing.

Slate Paving

For those seeking natural beauty with a touch of sophistication, slate paving is the perfect choice. Slate is quarried with a riven (hand split) texture but is naturally a smooth stone. It has machine sawn edges, meaning it can be laid with a sleek 5mm joint line, adding a touch of sophistication to any outdoor project.

Unique Textures and Colours: Slate’s layered texture and rich tones make it a standout material for both traditional and contemporary landscapes. Choose from options like Brazilian Black Slate for a bold, block of colour, Brazilian Grey Slate for understated elegance, or Rustic Slate for warm, multi-tonal, rustic charm.

Durability Meets Style: With its low porosity and naturally hard-wearing nature, slate resists stains and moss growth, making it one of the lowest-maintenance natural stones on the market, without compromising on its visual appeal. Its slip-resistant surface is perfect for wet areas, including patios, steps, and pool surrounds.

Granite Paving

Granite paving is synonymous with durability and elegance, making it a top choice for modern landscaping projects. This material has a sawn edge, meaning it can be laid with a consistent, clean 5mm joint. It is available in a range of slab sizes, giving you the option of laying singular sizes, or mixing dimensions in a 600mm bond.

Strength and Longevity: As one of the world’s hardest natural stones, granite withstands the elements and heavy use, making it ideal for driveways, pathways, and pool surrounds. Its sandblasted or flamed surface texture adds interest and a subtle sparkle, while also enhancing its slip resistance.

Versatile Colours: Our Black Granite offers bold, dramatic appeal, while Silver Grey Granite brings brightness and versatility to your outdoor designs. Whether you are creating sleek patios or stylish driveways, granite’s timeless aesthetics elevate any space.

Exterior Paving Installation Guide for a Lasting Finish

Achieving a durable, attractive surface starts with proper installation. Here’s a step-by-step overview for landscapers and DIY enthusiasts:

Prepare the Site: Clear the area and establish a suitable, stable sub-base using compacted MOT Type 1.

Lay the Bedding: Spread a mix of sharp sand and cement mortar evenly to create a solid foundation. Always lay paving on a full mortar bed: never, ever spot-bed (also known as ‘dot and dab’) any type of paving.

Position the Slabs: Apply a primer (if using) to the underside of each slab for better adhesion, then carefully place them, ensuring uniform gaps.

Secure the Joints: Fill gaps with a suitable grout or jointing compound to lock the slabs in place and enhance the design.

Finishing Touches: Clean the surface and allow the paving to settle for at least 24 - 48 hours before use.

Top Tip: We recommend using a reputable, professional landscaper for installations, to ensure the best results.

Paving FAQs for Homeowners and Landscapers

Are paving slabs slippery when wet?

All our materials are rated to at least a R11 slip rating, meaning that they are suitable to be laid in the outdoors in the UK climate. With any outdoor paving materials, extra care should always be taken in wet conditions.

Do I need to seal the paving slabs?

Sealing is highly recommended for smoother natural stones like sawn sandstone and granite, to enhance stain resistance and durability. Sealing natural stone does not make paving slabs stain-resistant but assists with ongoing maintenance. For other materials like riven slate or limestone, sealing is optional but is beneficial for easier maintenance.

Do you offer Steps and Coping Stones?

Whether you are navigating a change of level in your garden project, adding coping stones to a retaining wall, or redoing the front entrance to your property, Cheshire Paving Stones offer a collection of stylish off the shelf garden steps containing 25 options across a multitude of materials, including porcelain and natural stone. 13 coping stones are available to match our natural stone paving range.

What is the most durable paving material?

Porcelain is a factory-made material, so is considered the toughest paving choice. Stones like granite, slate and limestone are the most durable natural options, offering exceptional resistance to wear, weather, and stains.

Can paving slabs fade over time?

Natural stones like sandstone (especially paler, more porous materials) will develop a charming, weathered patina over time. Limestone can weather a little lighter over time (especially Black Limestone, which weathers lighter over time), while porcelain retains its colour for decades, thanks to its UV-resistant properties.
