Coping Stones in Natural Stone FAQs

What is the purpose of coping stones?

Coping stones protect wall tops from weather damage by directing water away, preventing moisture ingress, and enhancing the wall's aesthetic appeal.

How do I choose the right coping stone for my project?

Consider factors such as the architectural style of your property, desired aesthetic (modern schemes tend to suit smooth, sawn stone vs. traditional, where hand cut materials are at home), colour schemes, and the specific functional requirements of the area (e.g., slip resistance for pool surrounds). If you’re unsure of which natural stone material is best for your project, our friendly, knowledgeable team are on hand to help you choose.

Are natural stone coping stones durable?

Yes, natural stone is exceptionally durable, resistant to weathering, and can last for decades with minimal maintenance.

Do natural stone coping stones require sealing?

While natural stone is durable, sealing can enhance its resistance to stains and weather effects, especially in areas exposed to harsh conditions. We recommend sealing sawn (smooth) natural stones, as they are more porous than their riven (hand cut) counterparts. Sealing does not prevent the need for maintenance, but does help to remove marks and stains, and assists regular maintenance.

Can I install coping stones myself?

While it's possible for experienced DIY enthusiasts, professional installation is recommended to ensure proper fitting, alignment, and longevity. All our coping stones need jointing with an appropriate external pointing mortar, and due to natural dimensional tolerances, are not suitable for butt jointing.

How do I maintain natural stone coping stones?

Regular, periodic cleaning with a mild detergent and water, will keep your coping stones looking pristine. Natural stone coping stones can be pressure washed if you keep the jet washer on a medium strength and keep the nozzle approximately 30cm from the stone’s surface. Specialist natural stone cleaners can also be used to shift stubborn stains, but we always recommend trialling any chemical cleaner in a test/inconspicuous area prior to applying to a larger area.

Are your coping stones suitable for use around swimming pools?

Yes, our natural stone coping stones are ideal for pool areas, offering slip resistance and enhancing the pool's aesthetic appeal. All our materials adhere to the British Standard of Slip Rating, meaning they are suitable to be laid externally in the UK climate. If you are looking for larger coping units for your pool, look at our Garden Steps in Stone & Porcelain, which can also be used as pool copings.

What sizes are available for your coping stones?

Our coping stones measure (L) 600 x (W) 300mm, so are an adaptable size, which suits whatever application you are applying them to.
